Undiscovered Tuscany: Maremma Bike Tour

Bike Tuscany where you are a part of the perfection and harmony of this glorious place. Cycle through picturesque landscapes, visit historically authentic villages, and enjoy the amazing flavors of this region. Siciclando’s Maremma Bike Tour puts you in touch with a quieter part of Tuscany, an area still undiscovered by most – in the Etruscan area of southwestern Tuscany. Where local traditions endure and ancient civilizations echo through the present. This Italian bike tour offers the perfect balance of biking through vivid countryside and along the Tyrrhenian Sea. We have created bike routes that give you optional extensions, allowing you to get just the right amount of biking to fit your needs. We will take you through a region that sees fewer tourists and offers authentic experiences that make this tour memorable.

The Undiscovered Tuscany: Maremma Biking Tour is a special tour to Siciclando. Although Tuscany is a popular destination, Maremma is a unique and quiet setting for rich experiences. We have carefully chosen authentic places and settings to make this a memorable trip – a great choice for the romantic.

We will begin this exciting tour in the picturesque town of Orvieto, where you will discover many fascinating aspects of this beautiful place. You will be taken by the charm of this medieval town during a guided walk which will take you to a beautiful Gothic-style cathedral and then on to the Palazzo del Gusto (The Palace of Taste). This is an old monastery that now plays an important role in the slow food movement founded in 1989 as a response to fast food and fast paced lifestyles. There is a strong focus on maintaining local food traditions and creating awareness of the pleasure and responsibility of cooking and eating well.

The first ride will take you to Sovana, an amazing medieval village set in the south of Tuscany. This charming town is inluded in the list of the most beautiful villages of Italy. You will bike surrounded by the breathtaking countryside and will stay in Sovana for the next two nights. From here you will experience enjoyable bike rides along rolling fields, vineyards, and olive groves. Here we will gain a good understanding of the flavors of the region as we cook a Tuscan dinner together. This will be an unforgettable experience with our chef in the restaurant of the hotel, who will explain the ingredients and traditions of this region and how to bring it all together in an amazing meal.

You will be pleased to walk along the quiet stone paved road of the town after dinner; a hidden treasure of this area. The amazing art found in frescos and paintings will surprise you. Don’t miss a visit to the Duomo, which is close to our hotel

Pitigliano, is another wonderful town carved in the tufa cliffs above the countryside. There are more than 1,000 caves carved in the steep rock cliffs. This combined with the tall tower houses make this town a majestic sight. After our bike ride here, we will enjoy a walking tour that will lead us along the tombs and the village remains of the Etruscan community that dominated this region long ago. See the charm of “Little Jerusalem” named for the strong Jewish community that inhabited this place in the 15th century. We will enjoy a taste of the grapes we have biked past, when we visit a local winery and enjoy a light lunch.

We will begin a journey towards the sea, passing more charming villages including the town of Magliano in Toscana, which is surrounded by a town wall built between the 13th and 15th centuries. There are three gates that allow entrance into the village – like entering a fairy tale.

We will continue our taste of Tuscany with an olive oil tasting. Giorgio will help us understand the important points of good olive oil while tasting varieties from the region. A visit to a local farm will give you an opportunity to see how local cheese is produced. You will get a chance to taste the different kinds and enjoy lunch at the farm. Another experience we look forward to sharing with you.

We think you will agree that this tour is a wonderful blend of biking, history, culture, and flavors uniquely set in this quiet part of Tuscany. Join us!

Perfect Places. Peaceful bike rides.

Enjoy the best of both regions: the peaceful and artistic Umbria along with the perfect beauty of famous Tuscany. Biking is enhanced by wonderful side trips to towns steeped in religious history including the most famous, Assisi, home to Saint Francis. See the artists who make the famous Deruta pottery and weave lace, both crafts which have held onto techniques that are centuries old.

Enjoy time in Siena with its famous Piazza del Campo, a beautiful, busy town square. Visit the ornate Cathedral of Siena (duomo), a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture completed in 1380. Cycle through vineyards and end the day with a glass of the region’s unique Montefalco wine. You’ll have a difficult time choosing your favourite day.

Day 1 – Welcome to Umbria, Italy!

We will begin our tour in the town of Bevagna, a sweet and peaceful village, located in the center of the Perugia region. Bevagna is unique in that it is not a hilltop town, but rather is nestled at the bottom of a mountain. Discover one of the many medieval churches or the Roman ruins that include a temple, a theatre, and unique mosaics. We will stay here for two nights.

Day 2 – Loop around Assisi (30 miles/50 km)

Today the ride takes you to Spello a very nice small town, on the Subasio Slopes, with fewer tourists. You will be riding through olive groves and narrow roads in the quite Umbria. Enjoy another night at the same inn.

Day 3 – Bevagna to la Corte del Poggio (36 miles/60 km)

Bike to Trasimeno Lake with a visit to Deruta, famous for its elaborately painted ceramics with techniques developed over centuries. We will also visit Torgiano and Lungarotti wineries for tasting of the region’s unique Montefalco red wine or a stop at the wine museum. You will bike through soft hills and nice villages until you reach la Corte del Poggio. The road is continuously rolling up and down hill. You will be happy to find a nice swimming pool upon arrival at the inn.

Day 4 – Around the lake to Cortona (30 miles/50 km)

Another enjoyable day as we get a nice view of the lake, Monte del Lago, and San Feliciano fishing village from the Montecorognola overlook. Take a boat to Isola Maggiore where old ladies weave their age old laces and where you can taste delicious fish at Sauro’s. Then continue to Cortona where you will spend the night.

Day 5 – Cortona to Montepulciano (27 miles/45 km)

Today you enter Tuscany through the wine country of Montepulciano. Before getting there, you will enjoy a tour of the small Chiusi and Montepulciano Lakes. Once in Montepulciano, tour this beautiful renaissance town. Be sure to visit the superb Cantine del Redi Winery with their vaulted cellars. Enjoy a taste of the “Nobile” at Crociani Winery, a smaller operation, but very friendly.

Day 6 – Montepulciano to Montalcino (27 miles/45 km)

After a visit to the San Biagio church, head for Pienza, the beautiful Renaissance town, home to Pope Pio the II. On the way discover the incredible “Crete” landscape with barren hills, crowned by rows of cypress trees. Stop in Montichiello, a little medieval borough where you can sip a cappuccino (or a glass of wine) seated at the terrace of the local cafè. Make the detour to visit the thermal town of Bagno Vignoni with its incredible main square. You will spend the night in Montalcino, famous for its red wine all over the world!

Day 7 – Montalcino to Siena (30 miles/50 km)

The road to Monte Oliveto Maggiore Monastery is a gentle climb from Buonconvento. Stop and visit the abbey before continuing to Asciano, a small town in the heart of the Crete. From there continue on to Siena. The landscape is more rugged today with plenty of ups and downs, but the landscape is superb and worth the ride. Spend the night in Siena in a centrally-located three star hotel.

Day 8 – Siena – Departure Day

Free time in Siena to visit the town before your departure. Ciao!

The perfect bike ride is easy.

Masters have painted it since the Middle Ages, famous writers and movie makers have chosen it as the setting of their stories; the “Crete Toscane” and the Val d’Orcia sceneries are what people imagine when they dream of Tuscany.

This tour, which starts in Siena and ends in Cortona, encompass the most representative landscapes of southern Tuscany. Summer months allow you to take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. You may also enjoy a relaxing massage and a sauna.

Day 4 – Buonconvento to Montalcino (19 miles/32 km)
