Day 1 – Welcome to Umbria!

Arrival at the Perugia train station: take the metro ride (Minimetro) directly to the centre of the town. Tonight you will stay at an excellent 3 star hotel.

Day 2 – Valfabbrica to Assisi (5 hours)

We will transfer you from Perugia to the trail. The beginning of the hike is the most difficult and becomes easier. Enjoy rolling hills, thick woods and then a breath taking view of Assisi. Upon our arrival at the hotel, you may enjoy a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. Dinner will be at our hotel, which is just outside of town and within walking distance of the Saint Francis Basilica.

Day 3 – Assisi (3 hours or rest day on your own)

Two options this day. If you want to walk, there will be a 3 hour loop which begins with a brisk climb to the Eremo delle Carceri, Saint Francis’ peaceful retreat. At the top of the trail 500 meters from the Eremo there is a nice picnic spot with tables and benches. The other option is to explore the lovely town of Assisi, including the St Francis Basilica with the beautiful Giotto frescos.

Day 4 – Assisi to Spello (6 hours)

Start from your hotel and walk a trail which cuts through the Subasio Park and unfolds among olive groves to reach Spello, a lovely village with cobbled streets and peaceful squares. This town is much less touristy and quieter after the Assisi crowd. Tonight you will stay in Spello at a nice hotel with a view of the whole valley.

Day 5 – Spello Loop Walk (4 hours)

A circular walking loop that begins and ends in Spello. The walk will include a visit to the Subasio Mountain and the amazing hamlet of Collepino. Another nights stay in Spello.

Day 6 – Collemancio to Bevagna (5 hours)

A short transfer from Spello to Collemancio (20 minutes by car). We will start our spectacular walk to Bevagna with a visit to a genuine and rustic cellar operated by the Dionigi family (producers of Sagrantino di Montefalco). Loding in Bevagna at Palazzo Brunamonti.

Day 7 – Bevagna to Montefalco (4.5 hours – 14 km)

Today a loop in the heart of the best wine area of Umbria. After visiting Bevagna, which is known for its medieval market during the month of June, walk from Bevagna to Montefalco. Lunch will be at the Enoteca on Montefalco’s main square. This will be a chance to sample some wine at one of the best wineries of the area and come back to your starting point. Same hotel tonight.

Day 8 – Departure Day

Transfer to Foligno railway station where you can take direct trains to both Rome or Florence. Ciao!

This tour is moderate. In Umbria most of the point of interest are on hilltops. However the mileage is not too long and the only day that goes beyond 50km is very flat. The first six days are easy with only a few climbs to reach il Poggiolo, and Assisi. The last two days are tougher with plenty of ups and downs, however, if you chose the seven nights option you avoid the most difficult day.

Day 1 – Welcome to Umbria, Cortona

Arrival at Terontola railway station where we will transfer you to Cortona. Enjoy free time discovering the beauties and simple lifestyle in this little town.

Day 2 – Cortona to la Corte del Poggio (27 miles/45 km)

In the morning, our representative will meet you at your hotel and bring you the bikes and information kit. He will be ready to answer your questions about the tour. Today, our ride will take us by Trasimeno Lake. This area is known for its surrounding hills covered by olive trees, lovely villages and bamboo ridden shores which is a resting place for migrating birds. We will take a boat to Isola Maggiore where old ladies weave their age-old laces and where you can taste a delicious fish at Sauro’s. Discover Montecorognola view point over the lake, Monte del Lago, and San Feliciano fishing village. Spend the night in a lovely country inn.

Day 3 – La Corte del Poggio to Perugia (19 miles/32 km)

Today your destination is Perugia, the main town in Umbria, with its fine square and communal palace, its renaissance painting collection, and the Rocca Paolina, a subterranean fortress. We will spend the night in Perugia, a lively town with shops and fashionable boutiques.

Day 4 – Perugia to Bevagna (21 miles/35 km)

We are now in the heart of Umbria where today we will visit Deruta a famous ceramic makers’ place. We will also make stops at Torgiano and Lungarotti winery towns for a taste of the regions unique Montefalco red wine or a visit to the wine museum. Spend the night in the lovely old village of Bevagna.

Day 5 – Assisi and Spello (30 miles/50 km)

Today continue exploring the beautiful town of Assisi then ride to Spello a very nice and less touristy small town on the Subasio slopes.  You will spend another night at the same Bevagna hotel.

Day 6 – Bevagna to Spoleto (32 miles/53 km)

Biking down the central valley along the wine road, visit the town of Montefalco, with nice buildings and beautiful frescoes from Benozzo Gozzoli. Then have a lovely ride along the river banks before arriving in Spoleto, famous for its world known Drama Festival. Spend the night in town.

Day 7 – Spoleto to Todi and Orvieto (25 miles/42 km)

Now that you have grown familiar with Umbrian hills you will get in a bit more of them; the last two days are slightly harder than the rest of the tour. There is some up and down on the way between Spoleto and Todi. Todi main square is said to be the most beautiful square in Italy and there are a couple of very fine churches to visit. Once you visit this little pretty town, you’ll be transfered to Orvieto, an Etruscan town, which dominates the valley with its brown-red cliffs of soft tufo stone, which in ancient times was carved to make tombs or cellars.

Day 8 – Departure Day

End of the tour with departure from Orvieto railway station to your next destination. Ciao!

Day 1 – Welcome to Umbria, Italy!

We will begin our tour in the town of Bevagna, a sweet and peaceful village, located in the center of the Perugia region. Bevagna is unique in that it is not a hilltop town, but rather is nestled at the bottom of a mountain. Discover one of the many medieval churches or the Roman ruins that include a temple, a theatre, and unique mosaics. We will stay here for two nights.

Day 2 – Loop around Assisi (30 miles/50 km)

Today the ride takes you to Spello a very nice small town, on the Subasio Slopes, with fewer tourists. You will be riding through olive groves and narrow roads in the quite Umbria. Enjoy another night at the same inn.

Day 3 – Bevagna to la Corte del Poggio (36 miles/60 km)

Bike to Trasimeno Lake with a visit to Deruta, famous for its elaborately painted ceramics with techniques developed over centuries. We will also visit Torgiano and Lungarotti wineries for tasting of the region’s unique Montefalco red wine or a stop at the wine museum. You will bike through soft hills and nice villages until you reach la Corte del Poggio. The road is continuously rolling up and down hill. You will be happy to find a nice swimming pool upon arrival at the inn.

Day 4 – Around the lake to Cortona (30 miles/50 km)

Another enjoyable day as we get a nice view of the lake, Monte del Lago, and San Feliciano fishing village from the Montecorognola overlook. Take a boat to Isola Maggiore where old ladies weave their age old laces and where you can taste delicious fish at Sauro’s. Then continue to Cortona where you will spend the night.

Day 5 – Cortona to Montepulciano (27 miles/45 km)

Today you enter Tuscany through the wine country of Montepulciano. Before getting there, you will enjoy a tour of the small Chiusi and Montepulciano Lakes. Once in Montepulciano, tour this beautiful renaissance town. Be sure to visit the superb Cantine del Redi Winery with their vaulted cellars. Enjoy a taste of the “Nobile” at Crociani Winery, a smaller operation, but very friendly.

Day 6 – Montepulciano to Montalcino (27 miles/45 km)

After a visit to the San Biagio church, head for Pienza, the beautiful Renaissance town, home to Pope Pio the II. On the way discover the incredible “Crete” landscape with barren hills, crowned by rows of cypress trees. Stop in Montichiello, a little medieval borough where you can sip a cappuccino (or a glass of wine) seated at the terrace of the local cafè. Make the detour to visit the thermal town of Bagno Vignoni with its incredible main square. You will spend the night in Montalcino, famous for its red wine all over the world!

Day 7 – Montalcino to Siena (30 miles/50 km)

The road to Monte Oliveto Maggiore Monastery is a gentle climb from Buonconvento. Stop and visit the abbey before continuing to Asciano, a small town in the heart of the Crete. From there continue on to Siena. The landscape is more rugged today with plenty of ups and downs, but the landscape is superb and worth the ride. Spend the night in Siena in a centrally-located three star hotel.

Day 8 – Siena – Departure Day

Free time in Siena to visit the town before your departure. Ciao!

Tuscany and Umbria are no easy regions as the most interesting places are on top of a hill. However we have chosen the smoothest slopes to reach the top and the easiest routes. The toughest day are the fifth with the climb to Cortona and the last, going to Siena.

Enjoy a lovely ride among olive groves that will take you to Spello one of the best preserved medieval towns in Umbria. You will enjoy the narrow alleys and nice boutiques.

Day 7 – Bevagna to Spoleto (23 miles/38 km)
