This is our most popular bike tour and best showcases the beauty of Sicily. You will enjoy six days of beautiful riding that includes visits to three of Sicily’s most important archeological sites and time on the Aeolian Islands.

Savor the richness of Sicily.

This is Siciclando’s most popular bike tour and best showcases the diversity and richness of Sicily – seaside bike routes, ancient towering temples, charming towns, and the power of the volcanoes. You’ll begin this tour in Sicily’s capital, Palermo, where you will explore its layers of history and beauty on a guided tour. We will transport you to western Sicily where you will taste the popular Marsala wines and discover the beautiful village of Mazara del Vallo and its treasure, the bronze statue of The Dancing Satyr, discovered 40 kilometers off the shores of neighboring Tunisia in the 1990’s.

Siciclando’s beautiful bike routes will take you to three of western Sicily’s most important archaeological sites: Segesta, Selinunte, and Cave di Cusa. Bike to these parks and step back in time thousands of years ago. Spectacular!

The next three days will be spent biking and hiking the stunning and powerful Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salina provides a lovely green background for your bike tour. Lipari offers spectacular views of the other islands and the coast of Sicily. A visit to the island of Vulcano allows you to take a 40-minute hike of a volcano for the most fascinating view of the Aeolian Islands.

Vulcano is a wonderful place to begin a general study of volcanoes. It was considered by the Greeks as an island sacred to Efesto (God of Fire) and the crater of Vulcano was considered his workshop. The Romans later changed the name of the island to reflect the name for their God of Fire, Vulcano – which contributed to the word volcano used by most modern languages today. From here, enjoy the view of the island of Stromboli, another active volcano that explodes every 15-20 minutes; explosions which are sometimes visible. This volcanic activity is known as Strombolian and is used to characterize other volcanoes around the world with regular eruptions.

The tour takes us back to Sicily where you will spend two nights in charming Taormina, one of the pearls of Sicily with its ancient Greco-Roman theater and shop-lined streets.

You may also choose the optional hike of Mt. Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe and a fantastic day trip.

This Taste of Sicily will leave you wanting more!

Day 1 – Welcome to Sicily!

Arrive Palermo by coordinated shuttle from Palermo Falcone – Borsellino Airport and enjoy a guided tour of the city the first afternoon (3:00 p.m.). Palermo has so much to see – beautiful churches, lively food markets, and amazing architecture. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 2 – Transfer to western Sicily with a stop at a Marsala winery. (8.8 miles/14.7 km)

From Palermo, a private shuttle will transfer you near the town of Mazara del Vallo, where you will stay in a comfortable 5 star hotel. Along the way we’ll stop in the beautiful, little town of Marsala and then enjoy a guided tour of a winery for a taste of the popular Marsala wines. Upon our arrival at the hotel that afternoon, we will review the itinerary of the bike tour in more detail and enjoy a gentle warm-up ride to get comfortable with your bicycle. Tonight, dinner will be included.

Day 3 – Tour of Mazara del Vallo, The Dancing Satyre, Cave di Cusa and Selinunte (30.1 miles/48.4 km)

Today, before biking, we will tour the beautiful harbor town of Mazara del Vallo. This is the home of the mysterious bronze treasure – The Dancing Satyr. You will enjoy a guided tour of the town and the museum housing the statue. From here we will bike on a lovely ride to the peaceful archaeological site of Cave di Cusa, the quarries of the ancient Selinunte. These were quarries used for more than 150 years in the 6th Century BC. They were the main source of stone for the temples of Selinunte. We will then bike to the ancient Greek town of Selinunte, one of the most important Greek colonies in Sicily at that time. Here you will be guided through the remains of an acropolis and five temple sites, one of which has been re-erected. You will be transferred back to the hotel by shuttle. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 4 – Ancient Segesta and the Aeolian Islands (25.7 miles/42.9 km)

We leave the main island to get to the volcanic archipelago, the Aeolian Islands.
We’ll first cycle to Segesta, once the political center of the Elymians, one of three ancient inhabitants of Sicily. After a guided visit of the site and lunch, we’ll shuttle to Milazzo and then take a hydrofoil to Lipari, the largest island of the archipelago. We’ll stay in another comfortable 5 star hotel. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 5 – Lipari loop ride (16.3 miles/27.1 km)

Enjoy a loop ride on the island, giving us an opportunity to understand more
about the place and the archipelago. The views are outstanding and we expect that you will enjoy your bike tour of Lipari…and perhaps a granita (flavored ice) at our favorite place. This afternoon we are excited to offer a cooking class – a great way to learn and enjoy Sicilian-Aeolian Cooking and, then, dinner together.

Day 6 – Salina loop ride (13.7 miles/22.8 km)

We’ll take a ferry to the island Salina where we’ll take an amazing loop ride on our bikes. The first stop is small fishing village, Lingua, located along the Roman salt marsh. Here we will stop for a granita or coffee and perhaps a tour of the local museum. We’ll bike on, enjoying the breathtaking views, as we head to a private house to enjoy a glass of home made Malvasia wine and a light lunch. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 7 – Walking on the Vulcano’s volcano and back to the main island of Sicily

After breakfast, we’ll take the hydrofoil to Vulcano Island for a hike to the crater of the
volcano with our volcanologist. After lunch, we’ll transfer to Sicily to the beautiful town of Taormina. There will be a guided tour of the magnificent Greco-Roman amphitheatre – from here you will get a fantastic view of the Ionian Coast, Mt. Etna, and the city. The rest of the day is free to explore the city. Take a relaxing walk along the Corso Umberto with its classical music cafés, pastry shops, art galleries and clothing boutiques. Dinner is on your own.

Day 8 – Biking to Randazzo and to the Alcantara Gorge (28.4 miles/47.3 km)

After breakfast, a shuttle will take us to the starting point of the bike ride at Linguaglossa. This ride gently rolls along the north side of Mt. Etna volcano, which is amazing in the spring with the wild flowers covering the low sides of the volcano and spectacular in fall because of the rich brown colors of the vineyards. The scenery is accented with old ruins and lava stone walls outlining the fields and vineyards. We bike to the charming village of Randazzo, where we will have lunch at one of our favorite sandwich shops. After lunch enjoy a gentle downhill into the Alcantara Gorge – a beautiful end to the route and to our tour. A bus shuttle will take us back to our hotel in Taormina. We will enjoy a final dinner together tonight.

Day 9 – Departure Day or optional extension Hiking Mt. Etna

After breakfast, departure and end of our services. Ciao!
If you choose the Etna excursion you’ll be shuttled to the southeast side of the volcano for a walking tour.

Actual tour itinerary may vary slightly due to unforeseen circumstances.

Level of difficulty: Easy to moderate

Sicily is a hilly island, as is the Aeolian archipelago. For this reason we rate the tour between easy and moderate. The most difficult parts of the tour are in some stretches on the two loops in the Aeolian Islands (Lipari and Salina), which can be avoided by taking a van shuttle. The other moderate part of the tour is the hiking on Etna on day 8, which is an optional activity, a chance to discover the contrast between the forest and the lunar landscape of the volcano. The tour allows you to have a very good overview of Sicily from several points of view, in terms ofhistory, archaeology, and nature. You’ll also learn about the volcanic activity of the Mediterranean and its different aspects, in visiting the volcanoes of the Aeolian archipelago and Mount Etna.

Day 1 – Welcome to Sicily!

Arrival at Trapani Birgi Airport with a transfer by public transportation (public bus or taxi) to Trapani and from Trapani to Erice (by taxi, public bus or cable way). Arrangements can also be made for private transfer. Overnight in Erice at a 3-star hotel. Dinner is on your own.

Erice is located on the top of a hill that towers above Trapani. The town has a very

pleasant medieval atmosphere. In ancient times it was an important religious center for the Elymians, a population that lived in western Sicily before Greek colonization. Here they built a temple to the goddess of fertility where the Phoenicians worshiped Astarte, the Greeks Aphrodite and the Romans Venus. Erice was contended by the Syracusans and the Carthaginians until the Roman conquest in 244 BC. During the Arabian invasion it was called Gebel Hamed (Mount of Hamed). In the Twelfth Century it again gained some of the lost importance and then followed the political fate of the Island.

Day 2 – Bike loop ride to San Vito Lo Capo (42 miles/70 km)

Bike a moderate loop to San Vito Lo Capo, spend time at the protected Egadi Islands of Favignana or Levanzo or enjoy a Sicilian cooking class at the hotel. The cooking class option begins in the morning as the guests go to the market with the cook to buy what is in season. There is an additional charge for the cooking class. Overnight in the same hotel.

Day 3 – Erice/Marsala (36 miles/60 km)

Enjoy an almost flat bike ride to Marsala. The route begins with a panoramic descent from Erice and follows an interior route to me Marsala Salt Mining Reserve where you will discover the process of salt cultivation. You will then take an excursion to the island of Mozia with an archeological site of a considerable ancient civilization. The nearby museum shows some of the finds from the site which have a distinctive Egyptian influence. Other items are more Hellinic in detail.

Continue biking to Marsala where you will visit a winery. Enjoy a taste or two. Overnight in Marsala at a 3-star hotel. Dinner is on your own.

The origin of Marsala, the most populated town in the province of Trapani, dates back to 397 BC when the Greeks of Siracusa defeated Mozia. The Phoenicians, inhabitants of Mozia, found shelter in this level coastal district. They founded a city called Lilibeo with a strategic role in the area of the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, it became a joining point for the exchange of goods between East and West.

Day 4 – Rest day in Marsala or optional ride to Mothia – (15 miles/20km.)

Rest day with a wine tasting at one of the largest and most famous wine producers of Sicily or a short bike ride to Mothia. Overnight in the same hotel with dinner on your own.

Day 5 – Departure Day

Day 1 – Welcome to Umbria!

Arrival at the Perugia train station: take the metro ride (Minimetro) directly to the centre of the town. Tonight you will stay at an excellent 3 star hotel.

Day 2 – Valfabbrica to Assisi (5 hours)

We will transfer you from Perugia to the trail. The beginning of the hike is the most difficult and becomes easier. Enjoy rolling hills, thick woods and then a breath taking view of Assisi. Upon our arrival at the hotel, you may enjoy a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. Dinner will be at our hotel, which is just outside of town and within walking distance of the Saint Francis Basilica.

Day 3 – Assisi (3 hours or rest day on your own)

Two options this day. If you want to walk, there will be a 3 hour loop which begins with a brisk climb to the Eremo delle Carceri, Saint Francis’ peaceful retreat. At the top of the trail 500 meters from the Eremo there is a nice picnic spot with tables and benches. The other option is to explore the lovely town of Assisi, including the St Francis Basilica with the beautiful Giotto frescos.

Day 4 – Assisi to Spello (6 hours)

Start from your hotel and walk a trail which cuts through the Subasio Park and unfolds among olive groves to reach Spello, a lovely village with cobbled streets and peaceful squares. This town is much less touristy and quieter after the Assisi crowd. Tonight you will stay in Spello at a nice hotel with a view of the whole valley.

Day 5 – Spello Loop Walk (4 hours)

A circular walking loop that begins and ends in Spello. The walk will include a visit to the Subasio Mountain and the amazing hamlet of Collepino. Another nights stay in Spello.

Day 6 – Collemancio to Bevagna (5 hours)

A short transfer from Spello to Collemancio (20 minutes by car). We will start our spectacular walk to Bevagna with a visit to a genuine and rustic cellar operated by the Dionigi family (producers of Sagrantino di Montefalco). Loding in Bevagna at Palazzo Brunamonti.

Day 7 – Bevagna to Montefalco (4.5 hours – 14 km)

Today a loop in the heart of the best wine area of Umbria. After visiting Bevagna, which is known for its medieval market during the month of June, walk from Bevagna to Montefalco. Lunch will be at the Enoteca on Montefalco’s main square. This will be a chance to sample some wine at one of the best wineries of the area and come back to your starting point. Same hotel tonight.

Day 8 – Departure Day

Transfer to Foligno railway station where you can take direct trains to both Rome or Florence. Ciao!

Actual tour itinerary may vary slightly due to unforeseen circumstances.

This tour is moderate. In Umbria most of the point of interest are on hilltops. However the mileage is not too long and the only day that goes beyond 50km is very flat.
This tour will lead you to the heart of Sicily. You'll start from the quiet, little hamlet of Scopello and will climb to the medieval town of Erice. From there you will ride along the peaceful coastline of Marsala – and enjoy their famous wine.

Ride the waves of green and blue.

Sicily’s strategic position, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, lying between Europe and Africa, linking the eastern and western Mediterranean and the Latin World with the Greek resulted in it being not only the prized possession of foreign powers in its tumultuous history, but also a battleground between warring nations. Sicily’s long history of foreign domination has produced an incredible mix of traditions and cultures, leaving behind some of the most remarkable works of art and architecture found in the Mediterranean world. The overlapping of cultures, languages, and technological development can be seen not only in the towns and cities, but also in countryside, as the landscape has also been modified through time, with the acquiring of new irrigation and farming techniques and the introduction of new crops such as vines, olive and citrus trees, originating from other lands.

Western Sicily benefited from all the above, and as you travel through the least densely populated part of the island, you will be amazed by the many architectonic styles: imposing Elymian and Greek ruins in Segesta and Selinunte; narrow, winding medieval streets and exuberant Baroque churches in various towns and villages.

More information - click here to open or close

One of the most outstanding qualities of western Sicily is the juxtaposition of colors, constantly changing according to the season. The sea is a predominant feature. It’s many shades of green, turquoise and blue, contrast sharply with the intense whiteness of the salt mines, exulted by the warm sun that makes everything glow or shine. Inland, the greens, yellows and browns characterize the seemingly infinite succession of cultivated rolling hills, dotted with soft colored buildings, whites, creams, yellows and greys, depending on the material used and the period of construction.

The sun also helps give the excellent Sicilian food and wine it’s vivid color as many dishes make use of the wide selection of fresh vegetables found locally such, as tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, zucchini, olives, oranges and capers as well as many types of cow and sheep cheese and fresh fish. The enormous variety of almond based desserts is a wide topic you should definitely indulge in.

Day 1 – Welcome to Sicily!

Transfer from Palermo Falcone–Borsellino Airport to a comfortable country hotel close to Trapani, in the salt marshes nature reserve of “Riserva naturale delle Saline di Trapani e Paceco”. Here you’ll receive the bikes and all the info about the tour.
According to your arrival time you could have time to get the medieval town of Erice, just on the top of the hill close to your accommodation and maybe you would take your dinner there.

Day 2 – Nubia to Segesta (27 miles/44 km)

Enjoy this first gentle rolling ride from Nubia to Segesta.
You’ll have time to spend at the archaeological site before to take your rest to another comfortable accommodation.

The Archaeological site of Segesta is one of the most important and representative in Sicily. The site is renowned for the temple, one of the most representative images of tourism in Sicily, and for the theatre that like a shell suspended in space looks towards the Gulf of Castellammare. Segesta, together with Erice and Entella, was a powerful city of the Elymians, population coming from Turkey, and was marked by several conflicts with Selinunte. During the first Punic War, under the rule of the Romans and the Greeks the town underwent periods of glory; then it was destroyed by the vandals and occupied by the Saracens and ceases to exist in the Early Middle Ages.

Day 3 – Segesta to Contessa Entellina (31 miles/50 km)

This ride will take you inland, in the heart of the Sicily, where we feel the more authentic soul of the island.
The accommodation we use here for this night is a “bio house” where everything is done according to the nature and its own rhythm.

Contessa Entellina is one of the few towns in Sicily where you’ll find the road signs in double lunguage: Italian and Albanians. This because Contessa Entellina is one of the less Greek-Albanians communities we have in Sicily after the Albanians immigrations between century XV and XVIII.

Day 4 – Contessa Entellina to Palazzo Adriano (22 miles/35 km)

Today you’ll continue to ride inland, along gentle rolling hills, towards East.

Palazzo Adriano grew as a town in its own right when a colony from Albania settled there sometimes around 1400s. The town retains much of its ancient charm, that has been able to capture celebrated filmmakers like Tornatore who here filmed scenes of his Oscar’s Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. It is dotted with interesting cultural and architectonic sites. It has two major churches, both standing on Piazza Umberto I, used by Greek and Roman Catholics.

Day 5 – Palazzo Adriano to Alia (28 miles/46 km)

This ride is another opportunity to enjoy the heart of the island: large open views on the countryside and the simple life of the small towns you’ll pass through. Today we offer you two different lengths to get your accommodation.

Alia is a small town of the Palermo province, standing 734m a.s.l. and counting some 4,200 inhabitants. It is surrounded by a number of peaks with sites of naturalistic interest, namely Monte San Calogero, Monte Cammarata, Rocca Busambra and the neighboring Madonie Mountains. Farming and, more recently, naturalistic tourism are the town’s main industries. The area has been inhabited since the Roman Age, as reveal various amphoras, coins and material discovered hereabouts. Historical records also refer to a number of Arab settlements in the area that would soon grow to hamlets.
Especially renowned is the Grotte della Gurfa site, of uncertain origin, their name deriving from Arab term for cave. The grottoes were carved out of the mainly limestone cliff and are divided into two levels with several rooms. At the entrance is the stable with a manger and a tholos, meaning a round room. It is certain that they were used as a burial place by the christians of the 4th century. Some rooms on the upper level are only accessible from outside.

Day 6 – From Alia to Cerda, in front of the Madonie National Park (31 miles/50 km)

The ride of today will start with a gentle climb. More and more openviews will allow you to have an overlooking to the sea and the hilly area around. If you have a clear day, towards East, you’ll see the cone of mount Etna. A comfortable agriturismo, a piece of Sicilian history and very close to the Madonie Park will be the accommodation for this day.

The story of this place is really the story of a whole area, with all its events and deeds involving local people and places – a microcosm that talks with us and testifies to an older Sicily, which, nonetheless, still exists today.
It is a story about men, and work, about lives lived according to the slow rhythms of nature, and according to the seasons, where the day began in the last hour of dark before dawn, and ended at the first sign of sundown.

Day 7 – From Cerda to Cefalù (49 miles/79 km)

It is no exaggeration to qualify the madonita area as a botanical garden in the heart of the Mediterranean. It is also interestingly referred to as a crossroads between three continents. In fact, over millions of years, this area has been favourable to the development of hundreds of native and exclusive species, as well as a survival ground for species native to other areas, as distant as Central and Northern Europe. The Madonie is home to over half of Sicily’s species; a figure topping 2600. The geological structure of the Madonie is also heterogeneous in many ways: structure, breadth, height, hydrological structure, exposure and climate. Its landscapes are varied and stunning, going from the snow caps on the Carbonara, second only to the Etna in Sicily, to the wonderful coastline of Cefalù.
Cefalu has a beach, winding, narrow, medieval streets, and delightful restaurants overlooking a rocky coast. All under the everpresent gaze of the Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedral, one of the greatest churches of southern Europe. Nestled between the Madonie Mountains and the sea, Cefalù’s mountain boasts the ruins of a large fortress and an ancient Sicanian-Greek temple.

Day 8 – Departure Day

End of the tour. Transfer to Palermo’s Airport is on your own. Ciao!

Actual tour itinerary may vary slightly due to unforeseen circumstances.

Sicily is a wonderful place to bike! Be aware that it is not a flat island! We have created a tour that begins with a gentle rolling route and gradually increases in difficulty through the tour. The leg between Nubia and Segesta on day 2 is a very enjoyable ride along softer hills. On day 3 you’ll ride another great ride along the hills of Sicily. From here you’ll be inland in a less known Sicily where the you will be surrounded by farms, huge fields of wheat, and a variety of fruit trees. The tour includes a night at Palazzo Adriano which was one of the locations for the Oscar movie “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”. In the second part of the tour you’ll cross the Madonie Regional Park, a wonderful route, and then you’ll bike to the sea. The last night of the trip is in the wonderful Arab-Norman influenced Cefalù, famous for its lovely duomo. Join us for this wonderful experience of Sicily.

In the morning, our representative will meet you at your hotel and bring you the bikes and information kit. He will be ready to answer your questions about the tour. Today, our ride will take us by Trasimeno Lake. This area is known for its surrounding hills covered by olive trees, lovely villages and bamboo ridden shores which is a resting place for migrating birds.
Level of difficulty: Moderate

This tour is moderate. In Umbria most of the point of interest are on hilltops. However the mileage is not too long and the only day that goes beyond 50 km is very flat. The first six days are easy with only a few climbs to reach il Poggiolo, and Assisi. The last two days are tougher with plenty of ups and downs, however, if you choose the seven nights option you avoid the most difficult day.

Perfect Places. Peaceful bike rides.

Enjoy the best of both regions: the peaceful and artistic Umbria along with the perfect beauty of famous Tuscany. Biking is enhanced by wonderful side trips to towns steeped in religious history including the most famous, Assisi, home to Saint Francis. See the artists who make the famous Deruta pottery and weave lace, both crafts which have held onto techniques that are centuries old.

Enjoy time in Siena with its famous Piazza del Campo, a beautiful, busy town square. Visit the ornate Cathedral of Siena (duomo), a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture completed in 1380. Cycle through vineyards and end the day with a glass of the region’s unique Montefalco wine. You’ll have a difficult time choosing your favourite day.

Day 1 – Welcome to Umbria, Italy!

We will begin our tour in the town of Bevagna, a sweet and peaceful village, located in the center of the Perugia region. Bevagna is unique in that it is not a hilltop town, but rather is nestled at the bottom of a mountain. Discover one of the many medieval churches or the Roman ruins that include a temple, a theatre, and unique mosaics. We will stay here for two nights.

Day 2 – Loop around Assisi (30 miles/50 km)

Today the ride takes you to Spello a very nice small town, on the Subasio Slopes, with fewer tourists. You will be riding through olive groves and narrow roads in the quite Umbria. Enjoy another night at the same inn.

Day 3 – Bevagna to la Corte del Poggio (36 miles/60 km)

Bike to Trasimeno Lake with a visit to Deruta, famous for its elaborately painted ceramics with techniques developed over centuries. We will also visit Torgiano and Lungarotti wineries for tasting of the region’s unique Montefalco red wine or a stop at the wine museum. You will bike through soft hills and nice villages until you reach la Corte del Poggio. The road is continuously rolling up and down hill. You will be happy to find a nice swimming pool upon arrival at the inn.

Day 4 – Around the lake to Cortona (30 miles/50 km)

Another enjoyable day as we get a nice view of the lake, Monte del Lago, and San Feliciano fishing village from the Montecorognola overlook. Take a boat to Isola Maggiore where old ladies weave their age old laces and where you can taste delicious fish at Sauro’s. Then continue to Cortona where you will spend the night.

Day 5 – Cortona to Montepulciano (27 miles/45 km)

Today you enter Tuscany through the wine country of Montepulciano. Before getting there, you will enjoy a tour of the small Chiusi and Montepulciano Lakes. Once in Montepulciano, tour this beautiful renaissance town. Be sure to visit the superb Cantine del Redi Winery with their vaulted cellars. Enjoy a taste of the “Nobile” at Crociani Winery, a smaller operation, but very friendly.

Day 6 – Montepulciano to Montalcino (27 miles/45 km)

After a visit to the San Biagio church, head for Pienza, the beautiful Renaissance town, home to Pope Pio the II. On the way discover the incredible “Crete” landscape with barren hills, crowned by rows of cypress trees. Stop in Montichiello, a little medieval borough where you can sip a cappuccino (or a glass of wine) seated at the terrace of the local cafè. Make the detour to visit the thermal town of Bagno Vignoni with its incredible main square. You will spend the night in Montalcino, famous for its red wine all over the world!

Day 7 – Montalcino to Siena (30 miles/50 km)

The road to Monte Oliveto Maggiore Monastery is a gentle climb from Buonconvento. Stop and visit the abbey before continuing to Asciano, a small town in the heart of the Crete. From there continue on to Siena. The landscape is more rugged today with plenty of ups and downs, but the landscape is superb and worth the ride. Spend the night in Siena in a centrally-located three star hotel.

Day 8 – Siena – Departure Day

Free time in Siena to visit the town before your departure. Ciao!

Actual tour itinerary may vary slightly due to unforeseen circumstances.

The perfect bike ride is easy.

Masters have painted it since the Middle Ages, famous writers and movie makers have chosen it as the setting of their stories; the “Crete Toscane” and the Val d’Orcia sceneries are what people imagine when they dream of Tuscany.

This tour, which starts in Siena and ends in Cortona, encompass the most representative landscapes of southern Tuscany. Your biking will be enhanced by barren hills crowned by ancient manor houses, winding country roads lined with cypress trees, grazing sheep, and luscious vineyards. We have created this tour with gentler, shorter bike routes. It is easier than our Cycling Tuscany Hills Biking Tour without missing out on any of the highlights. It is a beautiful place, best explored by bike.

Day 1 – Welcome to Tuscany!

Arrive on your own in Siena. The hotel is centrally located and will make it easy to visit this very famous town and its superb square: Piazza del Campo.

Day 2 – Siena to Buonconvento (19 miles/32 km)

Today’s bike ride will take you through winding Tuscan roads. Luscious vineyards give way to the more linear cypress-crested hills of the “Crete.” Murlo is a nice little village on your way to the farm where you will spend the night. Summer months allow you to take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. You may also enjoy a relaxing massage and a sauna.

Day 3 – Buonconvento Loop Ride (23 miles/38 km)

Today, a nice loop ride will allow a visit of one of the most imposing monasterys of central Italy : Monte Oliveto Maggiore with its frescoes by Luca Signorelli. Spend the night at the same farmhouse.

Day 4 – Buonconvento to Montalcino (19 miles/32 km)

Your route today takes you towards San Quirico d’Orcia, a lovely small town with many old churches. On to Bagno Vignoni, an ancient thermal town where the main square is a steaming pool. You will spend the night in a nice hotel in Montalcino, the home land of Brunello wine.

Day 5 – Sant’Antimo Abbey Loop Ride (20 miles/34 km)

Enjoy this fortified town where you will enjoy stunning views from all directions. The descending road leads you to the beautiful and peaceful church of Sant’Antimo Abbey where you may be able to listen to Gregorian chants. Come back to Montalcino by a different road.

Day 6 – Montalcino to Pienza and Montepulciano (27 miles/45 km)

A very full day beginning with a visit to Pienza, the renaissance jewel redesigned by Pope Pio the II to become a “liveable” town. This is also an agricultural center well known for pecorino cheese and truffle production. A dirt road will take you to Montichiello a nice little village immersed in the “Crete.” You can stop there for a nice lunch or just for a cappuccino before continuing to Montepulciano known for its “Nobile” wine.

Day 7 – Montepulciano to Cortona (25.4 miles/40.7 km)

Today’s route meanders through vineyards and cypress crowned hills then passes the Farneta Abbey before climbing to Cortona. It is more challenging at the end of the day, but it is worth it. This little town is full of charm.

Day 8 – Departure Day

We are currently upgrading our Apulia tour. Itinerary changes will appear soon. Contact us for more details.

Bike Apulia, Italy with Siciclando. This bike tour explores the “Heel of the Boot,” an area less traveled by most. Enjoy this easy bike tour with shorter routes that take you along picturesque fields, through ancient olive groves, and beside the sea. Here you will discover a variety of unique towns beginning with the spectacular Sassi cave dwellings of Matera, the charming fairy-like homes of Alberobello, the beautiful baroque architecture of Lecce, and the seaside villages of Ostuni and Otranto. Each day is a new biking adventure as you immerse yourself in the sweetness of Italy.

More information - click here to open or close

This Italian bike tour will begin in the neighboring region of Basilicata in the town of Matera where you will discover the Sassi and the Park of Rupestrian Churches. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sassi are dwellings – both residential and religious – carved out of the rocky cliffs over centuries. They were inhabited until the 1950’s and then abandoned. They are now being renovated and occupied again. See the rugged beauty of this place. You will never forget it.

Cycle through the Murge Plateau, a territory that includes an astonishing variety of landscapes including caves, defensive strongholds, churches, and rock settlements. You will stay in the Itria Valley, characterized by groves of flourishing olive trees surrounded by stone walls typical of this area.

You will fall in love with the fairy-like trullo; round, conical shaped houses made completely of stone without mortar. They are centuries old and are lovely whether they appear solo in the fields or grouped together in the villages.
Our bike routes will also take us by the Apulian Coast, laced with long, sandy beaches, dunes and protected natural reserves. There are several traces of old Messapi civilizations where you will see rock settlements, watch towers, and castles.
You will head south to Salento and experience the sun and sea. The natural setting is striking with the land balanced between two seas. The cities and inland towns are charming expressions of the baroque style. The language, songs and feasts of this area still show the culture of Magna Graecia. Discover Grotta Zinzulusa, “the pearl of caves” with its name rooted in the word zinzuli (rags), used by fishermen referring to its beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.
For dinner you might look for one of the several restaurants carved out of the rock in the Sassi. Enjoy the flavors of regional cuisine in a unique setting. Overnight stay in Matera.

Day 2 – San Giuliano Lake and the Matera hills (22 miles/35 km)

This route will take you along a wonderful, peaceful road around the San Giuliano Lake. Stop at the Crypt of Original Sin with the oldest frescoes in the area. Back to Matera (pedalling or by van) and a free afternoon. Dinner on your own and another night in Matera.

Day 3 – Matera to Noci (39 miles/64 km)

Day 4 – On to Alberobello and Ostuni “the White Town” (28 miles/45 km)

Our route today will take us through the charming town of Alberobello, the capital town of trullo architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. After a self-tour of the town, we will continue through the Selva (forest) near Fasano, then along the Adriatic Coast to Ostuni. This town is an architectural jewel commonly referred to as “the White Town” because of its white-painted walls and buildings. We will stay overnight here to allow time to explore.

Day 5 – Transfer to Lecce (relaxing day/no biking)

Today, a little bit of pampering as we transfer to the beautiful Baroque town of Lecce. Enjoy a guided walking tour where we will taste puccia (local bread filled with salami or vegetables) or a pasticciotto (delicious pastry). Take time, at your own pace, to continue exploring the charm of this town – with many lovely buildings and churches. Relax with a massage at our five-star hotel.

Day 6 – Bike to Otranto (26 miles/42 km)

Day 7 – Loop ride: Otranto – Porto Badisco –S. Cesarea – Otranto (22 miles/35 km)

Our sunny bike route will take you to the wild, eastern rocky coast of Southern Italy. It is a unique place where Turks and Greeks landed centuries ago.
